John Porter is the extension program leader for the statewide Horticulture, Landscape, and Environmental Systems program area as well as the urban agriculture extension educator in the Omaha metro area.

As program leader, Porter provides strategic leadership and vision, coaching, and program development for educators and specialists across the state in the areas of horticulture, entomology, water systems, and more.

Porter’s work and passion as an educator revolve around connecting people and communities to knowledge and resources to build resilience, capacity, and equity around urban and peri-urban food production, food access, and sustainable agriculture. His work includes engaging learners through various methods to learn about fruit and vegetable production, farm business development and management for aspiring and beginning farmers, produce food safety practices, hydroponics production, food systems, and more.

He is a SARE Sustainable Agriculture Fellow, a member of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies at UNL.
